ESPAIS SENSIBLES

From 23th February to 27th May, 2018

Plastic artist and composer, born in Meliana (B. Roca) in 1955, is considered the Spanish sound artist with the greatest international recognition. For many, his work is a reference point for understanding the relationship between Sculpture and Music.

Throughout his career, he has been granted scholarships and awards by numerous national and international institutions. As a composer, his music is characterized by a careful elaboration of the sound matter and its discursiveness. Gesture, syntax, and the treatment of time are used as a projection of his own inner rhythm.

As an artist, his works and sound installations stand out for their sensory and conceptual nature, whose shape is determined by their function. His work gained international recognition in the field of electronic art, sound art, and interactivity from the presentation of his sensitive installations.

Sensitive Spaces (Sensitive Territories)

The exhibition consists of a set of installations based on the relationship between the viewer and the artwork. The pieces are sensitive and come to life with the presence of the public, from whom they capture a part of their vital energy. This sensitivity of the piece towards the viewer motivates a response from the latter towards the piece, which ends up provoking a very close dialogue between viewer and artwork. It is in this dialogue where a large number of visual, sound, spatial, and temporal elements are involved, inviting reflection on the relationships between all of these and, especially, between these and the viewer.

The installations, both visual and sound, are made with electronic objects. The form of these objects has arisen from their function, creating a very intimate relationship between their visual form and the sound, light, or effect produced.

Space I: Of Sound Rhythms

The installation is composed of about 30 sensitive electronic circuits capable of emitting acoustic, musically tuned sounds. These circuits are distributed on the floor of the room, creating a landscape sown with sensitive sound elements.

Space II: Of Light Rhythms

This work is composed of about 40 sensitive electronic circuits capable of emitting red light rays. The rays, directed horizontally across the floor, draw luminous lines that connect one circuit with another.

Space III: Tonal Territory

Formed by about 6 electronic circuits and 6 columns, each with 3 resonators, capable of producing continuous acoustic sounds, tuned and with a timbre very rich in harmonics. Each element produces a complete musical chord. The intensity and timbre of the produced chord depend on the light captured by the circuit.

Space IV: Of Water Harmonies

A set of about 14 elements, each consisting of a photosensitive sound circuit and a tuned resonator tube, are distributed on the floor in such a way that the arrangement creates the image of a stream or whirlpool.

Space V: Of Wind Harmonies

A set of about 9-12 elements, each consisting of a wind-sensitive sound circuit and a tuned resonator tube, are distributed on the floor so that the viewer, by crossing or traversing the space, leaves a trail of wind that activates the sensors nearby.
