I SEE YOU REPEATING THIS, I WARN YOU IN THE SWEETEST WAY

FROM 30TH SEPTEMBER, 2023 TO 18TH FEBRUARY, 2024

I see you repeating this, I warn you in the sweetest way is a verse from a poem written by Michele Gabriele. This verse acts as a translucent starting point for an exhibition that unfolds in different scenes of an abstract fiction. A scenario with a suspended temporality in which bodies, materials, gestures, and references come into play. Substances with which the artist speculates about the vulnerability of art history archetypes, questions the figurative and abstract concepts and speaks about the death of a friend from a subaquatic perspective in a sea filled with saudade (a Portuguese term for a deep emotional state of longing).

This exhibition proposes a narrative that revisits different contemporary policies and personal plots. A fictional reconstruction that is related to narrative exercises like “visionary fiction,” “speculative fiction,” or “critical fabulation.” I see you repeating this, I warn you in the sweetest way invites the audience to walk through the exhibition from a third-person perspective, encouraging the exploration of biomes formed by pieces that present interconnected conceptual, personal, and political elements.

In Michele Gabriele’s exhibitions, the artworks function as characters in a fractured “lore”, symbolic references to contemporary visual culture, and themes and art history memes. Gabriele’s work escapes defined categories to question the narrative of modern art autonomy and uses science fiction as a tool, understanding the exhibition as a space of affection between the substances and objects that structure and inhabit it.
