Reclining the Image, Twisting the Gesture is a journey through three works by artist Nicoleta Moise, envisioned as a place for openness, a space-time for paying attention, reflecting, and imagining through the archive.
Her work brings back images that allow us to question the processes of othering the body throughout history, specifically those socialized as women, inviting us to contemplate our present but, above all, to imagine other possible futures.
For the EACC, Moise presents three investigations: Nu sînt deplin fericită decât aici, în țara mea (I am not fully happy unless I am here, in my country) (2016); Nu-mi place numai marea, dar și muntele! (I don’t just like the sea; I also like the mountains!) (2014); and s+s=bff, Liga Femeilor Gorjene (s+s=bff, Gorjene Women’s League) (2020). These pieces relate to the play of montage and composition of the image, the search for the significance of gesture, and the crafting of new statements through experimental processes. They reflect on and through bodies constituted as feminine, their domestication, and their attempts at liberation.
Nicoleta Moise (Bucharest, 1989) is an artist, writer, and journalist. Her work draws from archival and documentary practice, blending image and text to recover, record, and compose narratives that have been displaced. She situates these stories through a visual artistic practice that combines with other research processes.
